;)

Where to start…. Going from supra to sleeper! The 1993 Pearl White SC300 5spd was purchased back in 2002 and was suppose to progress slowly into a pretty quick sleeper. However, being friends with Larry and others at the shop, I knew that probably wasn’t going to last too long. Boy was I right! It did first we started with a GTE swap into the car using a 1998 US Spec supra motor, and doing the basic performance upgrades like a downpipe, exhaust, filter, fmic, etc…. With the 5spd in the car and an open rear differential, we took to the track and managed to run a 12.85@121 mph. The car dynoed 430rwhp with those supporting mods, which was great, but the bug bit hard after that.

Onto 2004… over the winter we installed a Supra 6spd transmission, supra 6spd rear differential, and a custom lengthened driveshaft. Then moved onto the motor, and bolted up an SP Turbo kit (SP71GTQ) along with an SP Fuel system and 880 injectors. As for electronics we went with an AEM EMS to allow full control of the tuning. We then strapped the car onto the dyno and Larry worked his tuning magic and made a full pull putting down over 600+ rwhp in the blink of an eye!! Even though SP sees 800-900hp cars on a daily basis, I think we all were impressed to see a Luxury Coupe (SC300) put down that kind of power with such ease. During 2004 we did some changes here and there to the car, some after a dyno pull at the Chicago Supra meet. Attempting to do a ¼ mile pull on the dyno and having the driveshaft twist like a pretzel, we decided to upgrade. Larry made a custom 1pc steel driveshaft with CNC machined ends, if anything was going to break in the drivetrain, it WASN’T going to be the driveshaft!! Later during 2004 we piloted the car down the track and netted a 10.0@140mph, and on a 71mm turbo to boot. Clutch issues insued so the season came to a close. Unable to make a 9 second pass in 2004, plans were brewing for winter mods.

2005..The car started the season with the same SP71, however Larry being the devil on my shoulder talked me into upgrading to a SP GT42R-76mm turbo and put some larger injectors in, also installing an RPS carbon/carbon clutch. We revisted the dyno with the new setup and managed to put down over 800rwhp! At that point we started to try some new things for kicks, like a custom SPGT42R turbo, along with an SP racing intake manifold. We did a back to back comparison just upgrading the intake manifold and netted approximately 35-40rwhp on the top end, and besides that, it looks killer. With all of these mods done we headed to the track in search of a 9 second pass. Using a full 28” slick, playing with the 2step and anti-lag a bit at the track, we set a record on October 6th 2005. Running a 9.59@143mph with an AMAZING 1.36 60ft in a 3875lb (with driver) car!!!! To date SP now has the fastest full weight 6spd SC300 in the world that is known of. One major note, after another outing to the track with more boost, we ended up pushing the limits of the stock rods ( this was an untouched stock block) and bent 5 rods. The year ended with the car at around 890+rwhp and a mid 9 second pass.

Current/Future 2006 Plans

The motor has been stripped down and is being prepped for a custom SP Stroker kit, along with some big custom SP cams!!! We’re going for big power 1100+rwhp big. We’ll also be using an SP racing header and a SP GT47-80mm turbo bolted up to it. With the extra displacement we should see a significant increase in spool on the larger turbo. Stay tuned for dyno numbers in the spring, as well as some quick passes at the track! My experience with Sound Performance over the last 4+yrs has been without a doubt the best experience with a performance shop EVER! Being a personal friend of Larry’s for quite some time now, I see just how much he loves his work and his customers by the support he offers the community. I don’t know many tuners/shops that offer up their personal cell phone number, among taking and making calls at all hours of the night and weekends. It’s not work to him, it’s his life, and that is dedication. I would and will continue to give SP all of my business and recommend them any chance I get.

Chris
